Our world is so completely saturated in crumby gimmicks to lose weight and get stronger instantly. What if I told you there is something you could do that would add weight to your every lift and protect your body while doing so. There is a reason that tiny little Bruce Lee was able to blast people across the room with a one inch punch. There is a reason some folks seem to possess gorilla strength, while others in the same body frame are better suited for competitive floating.

The answer lies in a term known as Sherrington’s Law of Irradiation. Fancy word, I know, and it will likely make most bodybuilders eyes go crossed when you explain it at the gym since their goal is not about strength but about creating large (not optimally effective) muscles with higher repetitions instead. I’m not speaking for every bodybuilder obviously and have nothing against the craft, I just want to clear up some confusion about the difference between true strength and the appearance there of.

If you want to get strong, drop your reps to 3-5, sets to 2-3 and take ample rest between sets. You don’t need to be in the gym for 2 hours getting on every ridiculous machine and over working yourself. This is counter productive in fact! Perform low reps of heavy compound movements such as dead lift, squats, kettlebell swings, sprints and get the heck out of the gym ASAP to go play with movement in a park or take your dog for a nature hike. You will achieve greater results and have more time to boot.

Sherrington’s law of irradiation states: A muscle working hard recruits the neighboring muscles, and if they are already part of the action, it amplifies their strength. The neural impulses emitted by the contracting muscle reach other muscles and ‘turn them on’ as an electric current starts a motor.

Let’s paraphrase shall we. Essentially this concept is like a stone being dropped in a pool creating ripples through out. The size of the stone is dependent upon the degree of your muscular contraction. The harder you squeeze, the bigger the stone and larger the ripples, which in turn activate more motor units for the movement which instantly equals more power.

For an example, squeeze your fist just a little bit and you will notice the contraction in your hand mostly. Now squeeze a bit harder and you will notice it running up your arm perhaps to your shoulder. Now squeeze as hard as you possibly can you will feel your midsection, glutes and hopefully the rest of your body participating in the contraction. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts and you will notice yourself able to create more power in any activity by playing with this principle. It’s the same reason power lifters will tell you to break the bar when performing a bench press.

We need to be thinking about turning our whole body on to its highest potential. Any thing else is a waste of this brilliant system we’ve all been endowed with. It would be a shame to not experience your full potential in this lifetime, right?

True strength is about the electrical conductivity and the degree of motor units recruited when called upon in our system. True strength is about seamless communication through out our nervous system with nerve fibers equipped to carry a high “bandwidth” of information to activate a high percentage of our motor nerves during contraction. I want you to play with contracting your mid-section and glutes as tightly as you possible can next time you lift something. Once you think you are contracting as hard as you can, contract a little bit harder than that. Do the same thing with your grip strength as well and you are guaranteed to be stronger immediately. Why we don’t learn about this stuff in school absolutely blows me away.

You see, most “normal” folks are only activating a very small percentage of their muscular potential (around 20%) and even most trained power lifters are only activating around 60% of their potential. This is to protect us from ourselves essentially, but the protection has gone so far as to paralyze us from our potential. It’s like a parent that never lets their kid go outside because it’s dangerous out there. The only way to grow and experience life, is to explore our fullest potential at every level. Let your nervous system run free and even have the potential to kick some ass if need be![/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]
